A family of monkeys darts across centuries-old carvings as the soft scent of incense wafts through the warm, humid air. Cambodia isn’t just a destination—it’s an experience, a land where every temple, market, and coastal breeze carries the whispers of an incredible story.

From breathtaking ancient wonders to vibrant local cultures, Cambodia is the jewel of Southeast Asia that’s waiting to capture your heart.

Why Cambodia Should Be Your Top Travel Destination in 2025

In a world filled with sought-after destinations, Cambodia stands apart with its authenticity and charm. While Thailand draws crowds with beaches and Vietnam boasts bustling cities, Cambodia offers an unfiltered, magical glimpse into Southeast Asia’s soul. Here’s why it belongs on your bucket list.

Beyond the Iconic Angkor Wat: Hidden Gems to Discover

Everyone dreams of witnessing the sunrise at Angkor Wat, but the ancient archaeological park holds many secrets beyond the tourist trail. For an otherworldly experience, head to Ta Prohm at dawn, where trees entwine with centuries-old stonework in a surreal embrace. The mist lifting around the temple makes for an unforgettable sight.

Local Tip: Hire a local guide, like Mr. Sokha, who shared stories of his grandmother helping to restore hidden reliefs of apsara dancers. Their personal connections to the temples bring history to life.

Siem Reap: More Than Angkor’s Gateway

Siem Reap has transformed into a cultural hub, blending tradition with modern creativity. Here’s what you’ll find:

Thriving arts scene in neighborhoods like Kandal Village.

Farm-to-table dining celebrating authentic Khmer cuisine.

Social enterprises, such as artisan workshops supporting local communities.

Hidden cocktail bars, offering creative takes on rice wine.

Don’t miss the French Quarter, where colonial architecture meets contemporary galleries and vibrant cafés.

Phnom Penh: A City on the Rise

Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital, is undergoing a cultural and creative renaissance. While the gleaming spires of the Royal Palace and the bustling Central Market attract visitors, the city’s true charm lies in its modern reinvention.

Discover fashion boutiques on Street 240.

Explore contemporary art at Sa Sa Bassac.

Sip cocktails at rooftop bars overlooking the Mekong River.

Embark on street food tours led by local chefs.

For a peaceful retreat, visit hidden Buddhist temples, where monks preserve centuries-old chanting traditions.

Coastal Cambodia: Hidden Beaches and Serene Islands

Move beyond Sihanoukville to explore Cambodia’s quieter coastal treasures.

Koh Rong Samloem: A slice of paradise with bioluminescent plankton, pristine reefs, and eco-friendly accommodations.

Kep: A tranquil retreat with a famous crab market, lush pepper plantations, and the serene Rabbit Island, just a short boat ride away.

Planning Your Cambodia Adventure

When to Visit

The dry season (November to February) is popular, but these alternative times offer unique advantages:

May: Lower prices and dramatic temple photos during rain showers.

September: Verdant landscapes during the green season.

October: Post-monsoon beauty with fewer crowds.

Getting Around

Cambodia’s transportation options are better than ever:

New highways seamlessly connect major cities.

Local ride-hailing apps make city travel a breeze.

Riverboats provide scenic alternatives to buses.

Domestic flights open up access to remote temples like Preah Vihear.

Where to Stay

Accommodation options are as diverse as the country itself:

Heritage hotels in restored colonial buildings.

Eco-lodges that contribute to wildlife conservation.

Community homestays offering cultural immersion.

Boutique hotels showcasing Khmer design and craftsmanship.

Traveling Responsibly in Cambodia

Your visit can make a positive impact:

Choose hotels certified by Cambodia’s Green Tourism Program.

Dine at restaurants training disadvantaged youth.

Support local artisans by purchasing handmade crafts.

Join community-led tours that give back to rural villages.

Cambodia as a Hub for Southeast Asia

Cambodia isn’t just a destination; it’s a gateway to exploring Southeast Asia:

Sail the Mekong Delta into Vietnam.

Explore hidden temples near the Thai border.

Discover Laos’s serene 4000 Islands region.

Why Cambodia Will Stay With You

Cambodia offers more than just travel memories; it offers transformation. Whether you’re wandering through ancient temples, savoring a farm-to-table meal, or learning a traditional craft from a master artisan, this country will change how you see the world.

Experience its stories, connect with its people, and discover the heart of Southeast Asia in a way no other destination can offer. Cambodia isn’t just a place—it’s a journey you’ll treasure forever.

Rachel Riggio of The Red Road Foundation shares ten reflections from moving to Cambodia—and how the past ten years have reshaped her life.

Discover the Transformative Power of Purposeful Travel

After a decade of calling Cambodia home, I’ve come to realize that life in this enchanting land is a continuous journey of discovery and growth. Beyond the ancient temples and bustling markets lies a profound tapestry of experiences that have been woven into my perspective on life, love, and humanity. Lessons of acceptance, joy, and gratitude have reshaped my emotional well-being since moving to Cambodia. Here are ten invaluable lessons gleaned from my time in this remarkable country.

Ten Lessons from Ten Years in the Kingdom of Wonder

Resilience Amidst Adversity Living within the echoes of Cambodia’s turbulent past, I’ve witnessed firsthand the remarkable resilience of the Khmer people. From the scars of history emerges a profound spirit of perseverance and hope—a reminder that even in the darkest times, the human spirit endures.

Embracing Impermanence In a culture steeped in Buddhist philosophy, I’ve learned to embrace the impermanence of life. Cambodia has taught me to cherish each moment as it arises, knowing that nothing lasts forever and all experiences are necessary to fully be alive.

The Power of Connection Surrounded by the chaos of daily life, Khmer people place a profound emphasis on human connection. Small interactions with passersby, clerks, and mechanics are almost always pure and genuine, enriching my soul and reminding me of our shared humanity.

Finding Joy in Simplicity Moving to Cambodia has taught me the joy of mindfulness and appreciating the little details. From the laughter of children playing in the streets to the joy of fresh coconut milk, true happiness is being present for the small things.

Cultivating Inner Peace Surrounded by the infectious laughter and smiles of Cambodian people, I’ve learned the importance of cultivating inner peace. True peace comes from being present and not comparing yourself to others.

Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future Cambodia’s rich history serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of honoring the past while moving forward. The scars of the Khmer Rouge era and the grandeur of Angkor Wat both bring strength as we shape new communities.

Living in Harmony with Nature In a country blessed with breathtaking natural beauty, I’ve learned to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature. Moving to Cambodia has taught me that rest is just as important as work, and there is a time for everything.

Practicing Gratitude Moving to Cambodia has taught me the importance of practicing gratitude. The joy of giving and seeing my positive impact in the world nourishes my soul more than any material thing ever has.

Embracing Diversity In a country known for its cultural diversity, I’ve learned to celebrate the beauty of differences. Sitting with and having conversations with people from various backgrounds has enriched my understanding and appreciation of our shared humanity.

Living with Purpose Above all, moving to Cambodia has taught me the importance of living with purpose and passion. True happiness comes from giving away joy and making a positive impact in the world.

Reflections from Cambodia

Reflecting on the decade since my move to Cambodia, I remember the countless lessons learned, the unlikely friendships forged, and the memories made. Cambodia will always hold a special place in my heart, profoundly enriching my perspective and bringing me closer to the unified human spirit. Home is not so much a place; it is a feeling of coming home to ourselves and the human experience.

Where the path moves forward with ease, I know it is in alignment with the Divine; when things get complicated, and I’m not sure what to do, I let myself pause to see what alternative pathways the Universe suggests.

Those words have become so very precious to me.

You see, I am currently in the USA, as I came here to stand up for my best friend’s wedding and do some networking/moringa sales for my foundation. Unfortunately, things unexpectedly changed while I was here, which led to me changing some plans.

The first change I made came from a hardship that led to an intuition of how I had to break a pattern. It was a role I had played for far too long and to free myself from what I had typically condoned as acceptable behavior. It was hard, but I moved forward on my intuition, feeling in my heart that it was the right time to set these boundaries and create these shifts in family systems.

It was a difficult decision, but the fact that so many things lined up for me because I made the decision showed me that it was in alignment with my higher path. Though I no doubt have had to deal with the consequences of making that decision, I know in my heart that it’s a necessary move for the greater good and for the inner child within me that deserves protection.

Then the second path change came as I was supposed to return to Cambodia, actually today, as I’m writing this. I’ve been excited to return. I have my school, animals, a beautiful home in the countryside, and a loving boyfriend to return to. But, restrictions to return have not been lifted as they were scheduled to be. Going back to Cambodia right now would mean a $2000 deposit and a two-week quarantine in a government chosen location. So, I postponed my ticket.

In the meantime, a job at a local bakery that would help my friend be able to spend more time with her family fell into my lap. I was lent a car and given a beautiful little home to call my own while I go through this period. I didn’t even ask–it was freely offered. It was confirmation that I am where I need to be right now. So, I’m in a bit of a waiting period that I have chosen to view as absolutely sacred.

In my day-to-day life, with running a charitable organization, making financial ends meet for myself, looking after a home, pets, chores, duties, and consciously trying to raise the vibration of the world around me… Sometimes I seem to find myself rushing from one thing to the next.

The mindfulness that it takes to truly savor each moment is a disciplined practice that I have trouble following through with many times. I get into this game in my mind about how much I can get done. Checking everything off my list does give me a bit of a high. But lately, during this “waiting period,” I have vowed to myself to cultivate my disciplined practice of being completely present. I want to be completely grateful for all these little ordinary moments that make up my life. It doesn’t come easy, but the more I surrender and take a few deep breathes during the day when I notice anxiety, the more I can come back into my body. The more I slow down and am completely present when I do things like wash my hair, make a pot of coffee, clean up, etc. I find myself just being so grateful to have this incredible tool of a body and mind that allows me to really do what I want to do. It causes me to be so thankful for the minimalistic possessions that enable me to eat healthy food and be warm and enjoy the bounty of natural products.

I sat in a hot spring the other day, looking at the bees sucking pollen from the flowers. Each leaf was so beautiful, with all of the veins running through. Prominent veins that lead to smaller veins and their complementary colors. How intricate each little part of them was and how they connected them to another function that made the whole. I admired how magnificent those little bees were and what a significant role they had in pollinating our world. Then, I just sat there looking at the perfectness of these leaves, flowers, and bees. I thought about how often I go through the day and miss these things.

Then, I looked over at a human being who was soaking in front of me. I thought, how incredible this human being is! Our bodies are such beautiful tools. I thought about how amazing our teeth, our nostrils, our conical-shaped ears, the tiny lashes above our eyes that protect the precious eyeballs that allow us to take in all these beautiful wonders of the world. I thought about how amazing fingers are and how we could think about doing something, and within 1/ 10th of a second, our bodies are already doing it. I thought about all the functions of the organs and how our heart pumps blood through all these extremities. The absolute perfect complexities of the human being are just beyond comprehension!

To think that a soul inhabits this incredible tool to come on this earth walk and learn lessons to benefit the soul. Then, I thought about how we human beings are affected by the moon because it pulls water into our bodies and heightens our senses. How people are born at different times, allowing different star constellations to pull over their emotions. I thought about how incredible it is to meet people that make you feel at home and give you goosebumps. I thought about how wonderful it is that when you hear something that’s so incredibly true, that you could get goosebumps that would allow all of the hairs to stand up on your arms because you just know in your heart that something is right.

I sat there in absolute awe and gratitude for this incredible experience to be human.

This is what I want to share with you today. So join me on my mission to slow down and share in the sacredness and sheer gratitude for all these ordinary little moments. This mindfulness is an initiation to new levels of being, where we attract new kinds of abundance, and we find new levels of joy, surrender, and certainty during uncertain times.

I was born in Los Angeles, California- half a world away from where I live now. I live in the middle of the Cambodian countryside. When I look out my window, I see nothing but green, mountains, rice fields, an ancient tree, and always some form of a magnificent sky. It’s truly a dream here!

I was looking for a place to live with nothing but red dirt roads around me. I like being off the beaten path and surrounded by nature. I prefer quiet village life where everyone waves when you path by. I wanted to hear birds, crickets, and rain.

I met a Cambodian man who offered to build me a custom home on his coconut plantation. I happily agreed, what an incredible opportunity! Two months later, I was living in my beautiful little two-story home with a glass bottle brick wall and a beautiful patio that looks over greenery and mountains as far as the eye can see. So, I live here with my little animal family.

I have so much peace here and inspiration. When I write my books and articles, I voice record them in the notepad on my iPhone. I sit in my hammock or out on the patio, I look out into the beautiful green landscape like I’m doing right now. And, I just talk as if I’m talking to you or one of my best friends.

Right now, there is the sound of rain on the roof, beautiful low-hanging mystical clouds over the mountains that make me feel like I’m in a storybook from once upon a time. There is an ancient tree that I look out at, constantly reminding me of the power and resilience of nature. My boyfriend is singing romantic Brazilian music and playing his guitar in the background.

I am feeling really lucky to be alive. I love the life that I created for myself. I could be working a 9 to 5 in a city somewhere, but instead, I’m a writer who runs a free education project in the rural countryside.

My main objective is to be a part of a movement that raises the consciousness of humanity, at this time in our world.

I’m so grateful for myself that I created this life. I am so grateful for you, thank you for reading this and being a part of this beautiful journey with me. I hope I can inspire you to create the life of your dreams and to believe in a kind of world where we all get to do what we love.

We have amazing news.

Hello to our beautiful Red Road supporters!

It’s been a while since we last checked in. As the world has been so crazy, we have been focused on what we can do to be sustainable in these times: Improving facilities, our product line, and taking care of our staff.

We had to shut the school down when Cambodia requested it of us, so the past few months, we’ve been focusing on improving the farm, volunteer quarters, and getting our moringa skincare line perfected.

To be honest, it was a bit of a welcomed break, since we have been going nonstop for the past 6 1/2 years! We’ve had classes every day for the past five years, and it was nice to take some time for maintenance and work on becoming organically sustainable.

Without the salary of our teachers, we were able to make enough money in sales of moringa, bamboo straws, homemade mango chutney, upcycled glass, and bottle bricks to support our on-site caretaker, Bong Da. He just got two one-month-old ostriches for the farm, so exciting, so cute!

All the ingredients are grown on-site with help from our volunteers and local farmers, and it’s so incredible to see what happens to your skin when you don’t use chemicals on it.

Our customers in Cambodia absolutely love the 3-step skincare line, and I’ve seen the skin of our customers, as well as my own skin completely improve! Fine lines diminished, blackheads disappearing, and a beautiful natural glow! We have even gotten in contact with a Danish skincare clinic who is now going to test out our products on scandinavian skin. We are so excited about these new products! It’s such a pleasure to be providing this to our friends and customers!

As of now, we need support from our donors to start up small group tutoring classes and get our products abroad.

We are SO excited about our new product line, for every $150 donated, we would like to send our donors the three-step Moringa skincare line.

We are so grateful to all of you and are very excited about all these beautiful initiatives to be fully self-sustaining!! We are almost there!!! To receive the skincare line, please email Garrett@theredroadfoundation.org with a screen shot of your donation receipt or just reply to this email.
.
IN THE FUTURE

We have some great news about our future projects:
Before the pandemic happened, we had professors from Montana State University out to see our projects to check out collaboration possibilities for this and future years. The dean has approved a certified leadership class in collaboration with the Red Road Foundation!

We also had a professor from Brown University coming who runs a leadership in experiential learning project that supports-get this- Women running experiential learning projects for sustainability and leadership in Southeast Asia!! I know, it’s too perfect!

Furthermore, we have a new collaboration with The Leap UK, who are gap year experts and are going to be collaborating with us, as well! We have six students booked through them for January to come out and do our internship program!

Last but not least, we have a group of students from a private school in Saudi Arabia who are interested in joining us for our one of a kind expedition next year!

I told my nephew that the Grinch stole Christmas and brought it to Cambodia! He is four years old and absolutely loves the Grinch. He wakes up every morning and asks for us to put it on. I told him that they’ve really got the Grinch all wrong in Whoville, because he had some really good morals and wanted to restore the true feeling of Christmas for those plagued by materialism and jaded by “’who does it better’’. My nephew went on to tell me that I actually was the Grinch and I couldn’t really argue him there because I’ve spent the last six Christmases in Cambodia and I’m a professional recycler at a social enterprise. As the Grinch went to live up a mountain and recycle the trash from Whoville, I started to think a bit differently about if he really did steal Christmas or give it back its true meaning. Though I did enjoy decking in the halls with balls of holly the day after this Thanksgiving, I was looking quite forward to my regular “White Christmas” in Cambodia, on a white sand beach with a piña colada and seafood.

There is, indeed something to be said for a Cambodian, white-sand Christmas. It’s a different kind of Christmas and I happen to like it. I’ll be walking down the sandy beach seeing ex-pats, locals and tourists in their beach attire with a Santa hat and it really makes me smile. Though the Cambodians don’t generally celebrate Christmas in their own culture, they do captivate the spirit of Christmas in their day-to-day lives, every day. The Cambodian way of life is all about being grateful for what we have, celebrating and spending time with the ones we love. Christmas is about sitting around in a circle and sharing stories, laughing and appreciating our lives/ loved ones. This spirit is something that we can feel very strongly in Cambodia, on the regular. I believe packing up the family for a Cambodian Christmas would be a huge hit and a Christmas to never forget! It would be a Christmas filled with the true spirit of gratitude that sometimes has gotten misconstrued by corporations and competition.

In my optimistic opinion, the times are changing and many don’t want all the random stuff that we buy each other that ends up in a bottom drawer somewhere. Money is better spent by having enriching experiences with the ones we love. These experiences will last forever and they will change the way that we live our day-to-day lives. Hopefully these types of experiences can bring us closer together, help us re-prioritize and bring more gratitude into our lives, which is what I think Christmas is all about. In the past year, I’ve seen many more people thinking this way and instead of buying useless gadgets and clothes, people are spending their resources on experiences and donating to charities. I think this is a really great way to do Christmas and you can be sure to still get a delicious roast dinner… even on the beach! As many western people have decided to move away from Western society all together and move to Cambodia, they are here to ensure you find a delicious Christmas dinner that we look so forward to. So, after a day of tanning, laughing, singing, games and swimming, you can pull up for a no mess-no fuss Christmas dinner! One could even get back to work for the new year with a tan, as beach weather is perfect this time of year!

So, this holiday season, why not try something new? I’m sure you’ll have a Christmas to never forget! Whether you spend it on a sandy beach, on a high-rise, rooftop pool in the bustling cities, in a quaint fishing village by the river or out in the rural countryside I’m sure you will expand your perception of what Christmas truly means. When you let the beauty of Cambodia and its magnificent people into your heart, you will be changed forever. The spirit of Christmas thrives in Cambodia. So, cheers to this Christmas and the true spirit of gratitude and appreciation! You’ll find me with my toes in turquoise water, butt in white sand, pina colada in hand, Santa hat with a bikini and gratitude in my heart. Of course, there is also no holiday cleanup to be grateful for! There are many reasons to keep the spirit of Christmas alive year-round and I hope you do! Wherever you are and wherever you go, may your Christmas be merry and may you be truly thankful for all the blessings that we are so blessed to have every day.

In the past month we have hired three new teachers. They are highly qualified and passionate and really taking on a whole new curriculum at school. We got new books that the kids are very excited about! Since the end of rice planting season, we’ve gotten a new batch of about 40 students. There are so many kids coming to school everyday that we had to get a larger trailer to pick them up for class. Most of our students are girls because the parents cannot afford to send all of the kids to Public school, so usually the girls get left behind to help around the house and on the farm. Our new English teacher is a very intelligent woman who has completed University for teaching English and is also a midwife! They really look up to her and she is the first female teacher that we have had! We also have hired I lovely English woman to help us on the weekends for English class because our students double and because they are so eager to learn, we have broken them up into several groups that the two English teachers and our weekly volunteers help facilitate. We are currently extending our product line to making light covers, with the opposite side of the bottles, after we cut them and use The bottom half to make glasses. Rachel is currently in Bangkok finding lace, tassels and adhesive for the ambient light bulb covers.

We are collaborating with an organization called plastic free Cambodia to make posters in the Khmer language that we will be putting up in the village, they are also hosting a workshop at our school for the kids and their parents about the dangers of burning plastic trash and letting a disintegrate into the fields where we grow crops. If I had several very passionate and loving volunteers come out and share their construction skills, teaching skills, sports classes and music circles.

We have a care-taking family that has been working with us for two years and does an excellent job with helping our volunteers, maintaining the farm, picking the kids up from the school, pumping the water and helping with general overall overseeing of the project. This year they got a bonus, there is a portion of our land that we have signed over to them, and we are supporting them to start beekeeping there. This will give them an opportunity to grow and make some additional income additional to what the Red Road can provide. They are excited to learn the new skill set and feeling very proud that they will have it to pass down to their children. They do not own any land at this time, they simply live on site at our school and take care of everything. This new opportunity and bonus that they have received for their hard work the past two years has meant more to them than we can describe in words.

Thank you for your continued support.

[et_pb_section admin_label=”section”][et_pb_row admin_label=”row”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text”]

While working with a charity organization, you and your team may decide that the best possible future for it is to become sustainable. When you know all the hard work that goes behind raising funds and keeping staff consistent, it may seem like the only way to truly make long-term goals happen. Well your right. Based on my research and the few companies that actually create social and economic sustainability all have one thing in common. They invest in the locals and their ideas to get them to a place where they can work and profits can go into sustaining the project. This will involve you supporting local business that is capable of succeeding in the area. As the business you set up for your charity organization begins to make profits, it goes directly into running current programs within the charity organization. It is then that the charitable organization can exist without the dependence on fundraising efforts and when you leave will remain sustainable.

The first thing you will want to examine is the resources in the area of your charity or organization. The number one resource is people with small businesses, then look at problems that you can help solve. Are there things that could be recycled, do people have much extra time on their hands to make craft products, is there something you could grow or raise at the project site that would be able to thrive? It is important to see what types of things that locals are making, maybe even enable and empower family businesses by exporting or marketing overseas for them. The fee or percentage you charge for that service, will be able to help fund your charity organization. As you also, empower local small businesses, it will be clear to see, that as you grow, they grow and vice-versa. When you raise the quality of life for those around the project, you raise the livelihood of the charity organization.

Next important thing to consider is production. You will be able to employ local people and increase trade knowledge in your area which is powerful. Having local people on your team who are working to aid the project is very important for sustainability. To be adopted into a community as a project for the people and by the people is very impressive and will gain high regard among locals.
Another thing to look at is what is easy to assemble and what is not. You may not be able to easily acquire certain things for packaging or refining products. You will need to look at if it is more lucrative to sell raw products or to create a product on site. This will depend on your market base and where you foresee your clientele being the greatest. There are so many options and opportunities for how you can advance your charity organization to being self-sustainable.

With all things considered, whichever direction your new business takes, will need to be one that is the lowest cost to the organization and can empower and employ local people. We always need to remember that all is interconnected. When looking at the area your charity organization exists within, you will be able to brainstorm what assets and resources are available. Start small and let it grow naturally. By doing this you will allow the business idea to grow and morph into the most beneficial to the charity organization and those who live near and around it.

Take a look at what new projects we have going! Also please reach out, I’m always happy to help and collaborate!
