A family of monkeys darts across centuries-old carvings as the soft scent of incense wafts through the warm, humid air. Cambodia isn’t just a destination—it’s an experience, a land where every temple, market, and coastal breeze carries the whispers of an incredible story.

From breathtaking ancient wonders to vibrant local cultures, Cambodia is the jewel of Southeast Asia that’s waiting to capture your heart.

Why Cambodia Should Be Your Top Travel Destination in 2025

In a world filled with sought-after destinations, Cambodia stands apart with its authenticity and charm. While Thailand draws crowds with beaches and Vietnam boasts bustling cities, Cambodia offers an unfiltered, magical glimpse into Southeast Asia’s soul. Here’s why it belongs on your bucket list.

Beyond the Iconic Angkor Wat: Hidden Gems to Discover

Everyone dreams of witnessing the sunrise at Angkor Wat, but the ancient archaeological park holds many secrets beyond the tourist trail. For an otherworldly experience, head to Ta Prohm at dawn, where trees entwine with centuries-old stonework in a surreal embrace. The mist lifting around the temple makes for an unforgettable sight.

Local Tip: Hire a local guide, like Mr. Sokha, who shared stories of his grandmother helping to restore hidden reliefs of apsara dancers. Their personal connections to the temples bring history to life.

Siem Reap: More Than Angkor’s Gateway

Siem Reap has transformed into a cultural hub, blending tradition with modern creativity. Here’s what you’ll find:

Thriving arts scene in neighborhoods like Kandal Village.

Farm-to-table dining celebrating authentic Khmer cuisine.

Social enterprises, such as artisan workshops supporting local communities.

Hidden cocktail bars, offering creative takes on rice wine.

Don’t miss the French Quarter, where colonial architecture meets contemporary galleries and vibrant cafés.

Phnom Penh: A City on the Rise

Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital, is undergoing a cultural and creative renaissance. While the gleaming spires of the Royal Palace and the bustling Central Market attract visitors, the city’s true charm lies in its modern reinvention.

Discover fashion boutiques on Street 240.

Explore contemporary art at Sa Sa Bassac.

Sip cocktails at rooftop bars overlooking the Mekong River.

Embark on street food tours led by local chefs.

For a peaceful retreat, visit hidden Buddhist temples, where monks preserve centuries-old chanting traditions.

Coastal Cambodia: Hidden Beaches and Serene Islands

Move beyond Sihanoukville to explore Cambodia’s quieter coastal treasures.

Koh Rong Samloem: A slice of paradise with bioluminescent plankton, pristine reefs, and eco-friendly accommodations.

Kep: A tranquil retreat with a famous crab market, lush pepper plantations, and the serene Rabbit Island, just a short boat ride away.

Planning Your Cambodia Adventure

When to Visit

The dry season (November to February) is popular, but these alternative times offer unique advantages:

May: Lower prices and dramatic temple photos during rain showers.

September: Verdant landscapes during the green season.

October: Post-monsoon beauty with fewer crowds.

Getting Around

Cambodia’s transportation options are better than ever:

New highways seamlessly connect major cities.

Local ride-hailing apps make city travel a breeze.

Riverboats provide scenic alternatives to buses.

Domestic flights open up access to remote temples like Preah Vihear.

Where to Stay

Accommodation options are as diverse as the country itself:

Heritage hotels in restored colonial buildings.

Eco-lodges that contribute to wildlife conservation.

Community homestays offering cultural immersion.

Boutique hotels showcasing Khmer design and craftsmanship.

Traveling Responsibly in Cambodia

Your visit can make a positive impact:

Choose hotels certified by Cambodia’s Green Tourism Program.

Dine at restaurants training disadvantaged youth.

Support local artisans by purchasing handmade crafts.

Join community-led tours that give back to rural villages.

Cambodia as a Hub for Southeast Asia

Cambodia isn’t just a destination; it’s a gateway to exploring Southeast Asia:

Sail the Mekong Delta into Vietnam.

Explore hidden temples near the Thai border.

Discover Laos’s serene 4000 Islands region.

Why Cambodia Will Stay With You

Cambodia offers more than just travel memories; it offers transformation. Whether you’re wandering through ancient temples, savoring a farm-to-table meal, or learning a traditional craft from a master artisan, this country will change how you see the world.

Experience its stories, connect with its people, and discover the heart of Southeast Asia in a way no other destination can offer. Cambodia isn’t just a place—it’s a journey you’ll treasure forever.

Rachel Riggio of The Red Road Foundation shares ten reflections from moving to Cambodia—and how the past ten years have reshaped her life.

Discover the Transformative Power of Purposeful Travel

After a decade of calling Cambodia home, I’ve come to realize that life in this enchanting land is a continuous journey of discovery and growth. Beyond the ancient temples and bustling markets lies a profound tapestry of experiences that have been woven into my perspective on life, love, and humanity. Lessons of acceptance, joy, and gratitude have reshaped my emotional well-being since moving to Cambodia. Here are ten invaluable lessons gleaned from my time in this remarkable country.

Ten Lessons from Ten Years in the Kingdom of Wonder

Resilience Amidst Adversity Living within the echoes of Cambodia’s turbulent past, I’ve witnessed firsthand the remarkable resilience of the Khmer people. From the scars of history emerges a profound spirit of perseverance and hope—a reminder that even in the darkest times, the human spirit endures.

Embracing Impermanence In a culture steeped in Buddhist philosophy, I’ve learned to embrace the impermanence of life. Cambodia has taught me to cherish each moment as it arises, knowing that nothing lasts forever and all experiences are necessary to fully be alive.

The Power of Connection Surrounded by the chaos of daily life, Khmer people place a profound emphasis on human connection. Small interactions with passersby, clerks, and mechanics are almost always pure and genuine, enriching my soul and reminding me of our shared humanity.

Finding Joy in Simplicity Moving to Cambodia has taught me the joy of mindfulness and appreciating the little details. From the laughter of children playing in the streets to the joy of fresh coconut milk, true happiness is being present for the small things.

Cultivating Inner Peace Surrounded by the infectious laughter and smiles of Cambodian people, I’ve learned the importance of cultivating inner peace. True peace comes from being present and not comparing yourself to others.

Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future Cambodia’s rich history serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of honoring the past while moving forward. The scars of the Khmer Rouge era and the grandeur of Angkor Wat both bring strength as we shape new communities.

Living in Harmony with Nature In a country blessed with breathtaking natural beauty, I’ve learned to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature. Moving to Cambodia has taught me that rest is just as important as work, and there is a time for everything.

Practicing Gratitude Moving to Cambodia has taught me the importance of practicing gratitude. The joy of giving and seeing my positive impact in the world nourishes my soul more than any material thing ever has.

Embracing Diversity In a country known for its cultural diversity, I’ve learned to celebrate the beauty of differences. Sitting with and having conversations with people from various backgrounds has enriched my understanding and appreciation of our shared humanity.

Living with Purpose Above all, moving to Cambodia has taught me the importance of living with purpose and passion. True happiness comes from giving away joy and making a positive impact in the world.

Reflections from Cambodia

Reflecting on the decade since my move to Cambodia, I remember the countless lessons learned, the unlikely friendships forged, and the memories made. Cambodia will always hold a special place in my heart, profoundly enriching my perspective and bringing me closer to the unified human spirit. Home is not so much a place; it is a feeling of coming home to ourselves and the human experience.

Where the path moves forward with ease, I know it is in alignment with the Divine; when things get complicated, and I’m not sure what to do, I let myself pause to see what alternative pathways the Universe suggests.

Those words have become so very precious to me.

You see, I am currently in the USA, as I came here to stand up for my best friend’s wedding and do some networking/moringa sales for my foundation. Unfortunately, things unexpectedly changed while I was here, which led to me changing some plans.

The first change I made came from a hardship that led to an intuition of how I had to break a pattern. It was a role I had played for far too long and to free myself from what I had typically condoned as acceptable behavior. It was hard, but I moved forward on my intuition, feeling in my heart that it was the right time to set these boundaries and create these shifts in family systems.

It was a difficult decision, but the fact that so many things lined up for me because I made the decision showed me that it was in alignment with my higher path. Though I no doubt have had to deal with the consequences of making that decision, I know in my heart that it’s a necessary move for the greater good and for the inner child within me that deserves protection.

Then the second path change came as I was supposed to return to Cambodia, actually today, as I’m writing this. I’ve been excited to return. I have my school, animals, a beautiful home in the countryside, and a loving boyfriend to return to. But, restrictions to return have not been lifted as they were scheduled to be. Going back to Cambodia right now would mean a $2000 deposit and a two-week quarantine in a government chosen location. So, I postponed my ticket.

In the meantime, a job at a local bakery that would help my friend be able to spend more time with her family fell into my lap. I was lent a car and given a beautiful little home to call my own while I go through this period. I didn’t even ask–it was freely offered. It was confirmation that I am where I need to be right now. So, I’m in a bit of a waiting period that I have chosen to view as absolutely sacred.

In my day-to-day life, with running a charitable organization, making financial ends meet for myself, looking after a home, pets, chores, duties, and consciously trying to raise the vibration of the world around me… Sometimes I seem to find myself rushing from one thing to the next.

The mindfulness that it takes to truly savor each moment is a disciplined practice that I have trouble following through with many times. I get into this game in my mind about how much I can get done. Checking everything off my list does give me a bit of a high. But lately, during this “waiting period,” I have vowed to myself to cultivate my disciplined practice of being completely present. I want to be completely grateful for all these little ordinary moments that make up my life. It doesn’t come easy, but the more I surrender and take a few deep breathes during the day when I notice anxiety, the more I can come back into my body. The more I slow down and am completely present when I do things like wash my hair, make a pot of coffee, clean up, etc. I find myself just being so grateful to have this incredible tool of a body and mind that allows me to really do what I want to do. It causes me to be so thankful for the minimalistic possessions that enable me to eat healthy food and be warm and enjoy the bounty of natural products.

I sat in a hot spring the other day, looking at the bees sucking pollen from the flowers. Each leaf was so beautiful, with all of the veins running through. Prominent veins that lead to smaller veins and their complementary colors. How intricate each little part of them was and how they connected them to another function that made the whole. I admired how magnificent those little bees were and what a significant role they had in pollinating our world. Then, I just sat there looking at the perfectness of these leaves, flowers, and bees. I thought about how often I go through the day and miss these things.

Then, I looked over at a human being who was soaking in front of me. I thought, how incredible this human being is! Our bodies are such beautiful tools. I thought about how amazing our teeth, our nostrils, our conical-shaped ears, the tiny lashes above our eyes that protect the precious eyeballs that allow us to take in all these beautiful wonders of the world. I thought about how amazing fingers are and how we could think about doing something, and within 1/ 10th of a second, our bodies are already doing it. I thought about all the functions of the organs and how our heart pumps blood through all these extremities. The absolute perfect complexities of the human being are just beyond comprehension!

To think that a soul inhabits this incredible tool to come on this earth walk and learn lessons to benefit the soul. Then, I thought about how we human beings are affected by the moon because it pulls water into our bodies and heightens our senses. How people are born at different times, allowing different star constellations to pull over their emotions. I thought about how incredible it is to meet people that make you feel at home and give you goosebumps. I thought about how wonderful it is that when you hear something that’s so incredibly true, that you could get goosebumps that would allow all of the hairs to stand up on your arms because you just know in your heart that something is right.

I sat there in absolute awe and gratitude for this incredible experience to be human.

This is what I want to share with you today. So join me on my mission to slow down and share in the sacredness and sheer gratitude for all these ordinary little moments. This mindfulness is an initiation to new levels of being, where we attract new kinds of abundance, and we find new levels of joy, surrender, and certainty during uncertain times.

There is no doubt that in this day and age, one typically needs a great resume to give us a jump start on the dreams we are pursuing. Often times, we are just getting out of school or have been busy with our families and therefore don’t quite have the job references that you would like to have. One thing that can truly help with boosting your resume is getting involved worth worldwide charities! There is so much to learn from these experiences and it really says something positive to your future employer to know that you are participating in aiding our world.

There are all types of worldwide charities, so you can choose one that will pair well with your chosen field. There are environmentally based organizations, human rights, work with animals, social enterprises and so many more. When you imagine where you would like to be of aid in our world, you can then pursue the option that best suit you. You will have to look at yourself and see what your strengths are and how you can help. This will be important information that you should include in your resume.

Once you get to the place of working with this foundation, you will then be able to show your potential employer that you care about our world and making a difference. You are demonstrating that you can take action when action needs to be taken! Worldwide charities are making excellent initiatives and as part of a team like that, you will be able to show where you can function well on a team. These are all important attributes, for any job you may be applying for.

Undertaking volunteer work, in particular, is exhibiting that you have the drive and motivation to do something you care about, even if it is not for material gain. This is something that an employer wants to see. To have the ability to stick to something, even when it is difficult, because you want to make a difference is a person that just about anyone would want to represent or be a part of their company. Involvement in worldwide charities is an indication that you have heart and that you are part of assisting our world, not just talking about it.

All in all, there are so many qualities that those who work within worldwide charities hold. To recap, there is a dedication to aiding a cause that benefits the field of work you are applying for, you must examine your strength and abilities, realizing and appreciating where your attributes are on a team, that you believe one person can make a difference and that you are willing to do your part and create a better world. These qualities amongst holding strong to your beliefs, self-confidence, compassion, and kind-heartedness are all virtues and behavior traits that employers are looking for. Individuals that can show their values and characteristics emanate natural strength and self-leadership tendencies. Working amongst others that are involved with worldwide charities, will definitely give you more ideas, as well!

We have amazing news.

Hello to our beautiful Red Road supporters!

It’s been a while since we last checked in. As the world has been so crazy, we have been focused on what we can do to be sustainable in these times: Improving facilities, our product line, and taking care of our staff.

We had to shut the school down when Cambodia requested it of us, so the past few months, we’ve been focusing on improving the farm, volunteer quarters, and getting our moringa skincare line perfected.

To be honest, it was a bit of a welcomed break, since we have been going nonstop for the past 6 1/2 years! We’ve had classes every day for the past five years, and it was nice to take some time for maintenance and work on becoming organically sustainable.

Without the salary of our teachers, we were able to make enough money in sales of moringa, bamboo straws, homemade mango chutney, upcycled glass, and bottle bricks to support our on-site caretaker, Bong Da. He just got two one-month-old ostriches for the farm, so exciting, so cute!

All the ingredients are grown on-site with help from our volunteers and local farmers, and it’s so incredible to see what happens to your skin when you don’t use chemicals on it.

Our customers in Cambodia absolutely love the 3-step skincare line, and I’ve seen the skin of our customers, as well as my own skin completely improve! Fine lines diminished, blackheads disappearing, and a beautiful natural glow! We have even gotten in contact with a Danish skincare clinic who is now going to test out our products on scandinavian skin. We are so excited about these new products! It’s such a pleasure to be providing this to our friends and customers!

As of now, we need support from our donors to start up small group tutoring classes and get our products abroad.

We are SO excited about our new product line, for every $150 donated, we would like to send our donors the three-step Moringa skincare line.

We are so grateful to all of you and are very excited about all these beautiful initiatives to be fully self-sustaining!! We are almost there!!! To receive the skincare line, please email Garrett@theredroadfoundation.org with a screen shot of your donation receipt or just reply to this email.
.
IN THE FUTURE

We have some great news about our future projects:
Before the pandemic happened, we had professors from Montana State University out to see our projects to check out collaboration possibilities for this and future years. The dean has approved a certified leadership class in collaboration with the Red Road Foundation!

We also had a professor from Brown University coming who runs a leadership in experiential learning project that supports-get this- Women running experiential learning projects for sustainability and leadership in Southeast Asia!! I know, it’s too perfect!

Furthermore, we have a new collaboration with The Leap UK, who are gap year experts and are going to be collaborating with us, as well! We have six students booked through them for January to come out and do our internship program!

Last but not least, we have a group of students from a private school in Saudi Arabia who are interested in joining us for our one of a kind expedition next year!

Around this time of year, many college freshman and various other University students in the USA are looking for the most affordable and trustworthy volunteer projects and internships abroad for the upcoming summer. It’s a great time of year to start pondering how we will implement all the knowledge we’ve obtained throughout the year in University. As we are spending time with our families, discussing our future and how we will be able to make great sustainable impacts in our world it is an ideal time to start planning. We learn so much in university/college and it’s an incredible opportunity to be able to put all of the theories and lessons to use with some hands-on experiential learning through grass roots movements that are consciously changing the world. Internships abroad in third world countries are something that can give us the ability to gain new perspectives on life and figure out how we can use our mind, body and spirit as tools to shape the next generation.

It’s only in the past decade that we’ve started the sustainable development movement in America. Our culture has been investing more time in developing sustainable solutions as our natural resources are diminishing. We must find ways to make sustainable development lucrative for ourselves while having social impacts that can change the lives of those we work with. This is why business impact and social enterprises are instrumental in making lasting, sustainable development. There is so much good work to be done and gathering together with like-minded people for a 6 to 8-week program focusing on leadership and sustainability could be the confidence-booster one needs to implement new ideas in our world. As Margaret Mead said “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful and committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.

The Red Road Foundation offers internships for college/University freshman and it is one of the most affordable and trustworthy internship programs in the world! The Red Road Foundation offers four-week programs (as well as 6-8 week extended custom programs for a discounted prices) during the summer months that focus particularly on sustainable development and leadership. During the month long course you will gain true insights into the challenges and solutions of cross-cultural collaborations. You will work with groups of like-minded individuals to bring sustainable solutions to the way a small village lives by contributing to new models that incorporate free education, waste management, recycling, health and clean water. These experiences will be hands-on and you will experience life through the grateful eyes of locals, this is something that can affect your perspective on life in the long-term. These experiences are intertwined with amazing adventure travel opportunities where you get to experience the road less traveled and secret nature spots. These internships can change your view on life, give you the confidence you need to pursue ideas and give you the ability employ all the amazing things you’ve been learning in school. The Red Road Foundation is a sustainable development program in rural Cambodia that is making big differences when it comes to education, waste management, sustainability, recycling and environmental impact.

The Red Road Foundation is the best internship I’ve ever been a part of! Working with this organization gave me the ability to have my voice heard and my ideas tested out. This opportunity is made most special by working with a team of locals and long-term ex-pats who have made sustainable contributions in this field, speak the local language and will be working hands-on with you to make long-term sustainable impacts in the rural countryside. They are testing out grassroots models that have the potential to spread worldwide! As we are having major problems with waste management and sustainability in our world at this time, it’s of great importance that we dedicate time and energy into the sustainable development practices. We need sustainable development leaders And this is a great opportunity to fine tune your skills as a leader and environmental advocate.

Though the Red Road Foundation’s Internship is a four week long experience that also incorporates adventure travel, you can specially customize your trip to be 6 to 8 weeks long, as you add on an extra 2 to 4 weeks of fieldwork. The extra few weeks are less than half the price of the original 4 week program, as it will not incorporate travel and you will spend the remainder of your time at the project, incorporating all you’ve learned. You will be able to receive internship credits and the perspective shift that you will gain from this experience will surely change the course of your life!

There are many internships for college freshman available, many 6 to 8 week programs on sustainability but if you’re looking for the most affordable and trustworthy internship abroad I would recommend the Red Road Foundation. My time spent at the Red Road has made me a better person, it is almost some type of utopia that makes my heart feel full and at the end of the day when I look in the mirror, I feel proud of myself and I can see how my energies, my body and my intentions have sculpted the world around me. I am so grateful that I have been able to work with this amazing organization! Sustainability is so important in NGOs, relying on donations is unsustainable for the long term and the social enterprises that they are developing are sure to make this program one that lasts the test of time. I am so grateful to be a part of this and I wish the same for you!

Good luck on your quest to find the best, most affordable and trustworthy internship focusing on sustainability and leadership! It’s wonderful that you have chosen to be a force of positive change in our world and we need more people like you! Cheers to the life we create and to having a happy, healthy heart!

I know it has been a while since you’ve heard from us!

I apologize for that.Things have been progressing and we have been very busy! We had a Danish company reach out to us and enter us in a competition that we won and got a freshwater bore well dug, onsite! We can now get water year-round and experiment with new types of farming (aquaponics and hydroponics) that can grow some vegetables that are very hard to grow in this area. Many of our students are very excited to learn about this, as they come from farming families. Also, we had another Danish company reach out to us called Canopy LAB they have an amazing online learning platform with classes in Environmental Leadership, Human Rights, Sustainable Development, Women’s Empowerment, etc.. We have just partnered with them and have an amazing American volunteer with two master’s degrees, coming out to train our teachers in it and implement this into our curriculum! On top of that, a third organization reached out to us, ACE Cambodia a clean-cooking/off-grid energy company. They are coming out to start a solar-powered battery lamp library at our school and to give a presentation on sustainability, renewable energies & clean cooking.

We just got an amazing new board member named Iain Rae, from England. He is helping us develop our new internship program. This is very exciting! It will be the bread and butter project that leading us to full self-sustainability. Our trips will fully fund our school and pay for the eco-construction workshops for locals in the community. What we are doing is starting an internship program for college students to come get credits for Leadership in Sustainable Development and Personal Development. As we have successfully hosted over 700 interns and volunteers, we have decided to make an official curriculum. We have continuously received amazing letters from past volunteers who vouch that working with our program has transformed the way they view themselves and their abilities in our world. This inspired us to bridge the gap between western and eastern ways of life and bring people together in symbiotic relationships.

I am currently in the US recruiting students but more specifically, meeting with department directors at the major Universities between Montana and Austin, to develop a few partnerships for curriculum and project collaboration with our programs. We are working at a grassroots level and blazing the trail for some innovative ways of handling trash and free education, we are a perfect model to have students get involved in implementing new ideas and experiential learning. We are interested in having faculty-led programs that have a long-term affiliation with our school. We have U of M and MSU interested! MSU is developing a Leadership Minor and has expressed interest in pursuing a partnership that incorporates The Red Road Foundation in the curriculum! It is very exciting! I am currently in Colorado and meeting with Universities working on this full time, I often have some financial worries in getting this off the ground. When I came out here, I was wondering how I would be able to afford hotels and renting a car, etc.. It was basically impossible for me, but I had faith that if it was meant to be then my needs would be met. I called my friend, Halladay, which most of you know because she plays music for most of our fundraisers and wrote “Just a Little Love” as a tribute to The Red Road. Before I could even tell her that I was planning on coming to the States and visiting Universities between Montana and Austin, she told me that she had finally finished up her 1960’s bus after two years of working on it and that she was going to take it on tour during the exact time frame and on the exact same route that I was considering for our recruiting trip. BOOM! The Universe provided. So now, we are here on the road. Here are some photos from our trip!

We have all heard the saying “Change your perspective, change your life” …but when we are so used to the monotony our day to day affairs how can we really restart the thinking process? For many, a retreat into a foreign land is the perfect way to recalibrate our response and perspectives. After all, being in a completely new environment will have you looking at the world from a new context and gives the opportunity to redefine yourself and your opinions in the moment. I had the most beautiful experience that changed my life in Cambodia. Many people don’t know this, but Cambodia is a secret gem because of something that is difficult to put into words. There is a multitude of reasons to visit Cambodia. Besides the stunning views, smiles of the people and a $.50 beer, there is a charm that goes much deeper. Visiting Cambodia is simply good for the soul. “Why?”, you ask. It is because there is something far deeper penetrating every little day-to-day interaction with these people. This quality and perspective that I speak of, I believe, comes from the humility of being a young nation in the aftermath of destruction following the civil war and the gratitude to live each moment with the pure joy to be alive and to share.

Of course, there are geographical differences that affect how strong you may feel this. It is in its purest form when you get to the rural countryside. It definitely doesn’t take long to get into the countryside from a metropolitan area… Sometimes you simply drive a few minutes from the city and see yourself surrounded by rice fields or mangoes. When you get there, there is something so genuine and pure about the way the villagers go about life. Even in the smaller cities you can still feel it in all day to day errands and stops at shops and at the market. It is a contagious, joyous, accepting nonchalance. It is a refreshment from the hustle and bustle of western civilization. This is why in the major cities, it is not the same. The big cities are highly influenced by western civilization, culture and some societal pressures. Many Cambodian people who live in the city have been pushed into one-room shacks to build multimillion-dollar buildings. For this reason, some jaded ways of viewing the world are creeping into the city. Though not everyone has been swept away by all the changes… There is still a multitude of gems and genuine smiles at every corner.

So, when you submerge yourself in this culture, you are able to learn more about the art of happiness. Rural Cambodians live for the day. It is apparent that they work hard, rest hard, party hard and spend a lot of time with the people they love. Every interaction is looked upon with the spice of curiosity and the simple innocence of experiencing a new situation for the first time. How wonderful would western people feel if they were able to live with this perspective? It is a gift for our consciousness! To have the opportunity to emerge in a place where people simply do not stress the small stuff, they innocently laugh off any stress or sense of urgency, don’t spend countless hours of time asking why, when something bad happens they just move forward and accept. These teachings are so simple, but sometimes they cannot be fully understood unless you can see them in action.

When we are able to incorporate these viewpoints into the way we live our day to day life, we can feel joy much easier. It is easy to believe these concepts, but it is far harder to adjust your mindset in the day to day affairs. In so many instances, people may believe that they live like this until they see others who are truly living this way. Even spending one afternoon, sitting in the rural countryside and having a picnic on someone’s bamboo table will help you to relax into the joy of being that s living underneath all of the expectations, perceived urgency, fear and stress. They will teach you that Joy is not something to reach for or find, it is something that we can feel in each moment if we can learn to let go and unlearn the mindset that we were raised amongst.

From the times, countless times, I’ve been broken down on the side of the road with a mechanical motor issue, I have always been picked up by a local, taken to the nearest mechanic, given mango with chilli and charged a few dollars if that! And many of these cases, they have actually driven out to my broken vehicle and fixed it there on-site for less than five dollars. I will be sitting with their family, having a laugh and watching the kids and animals in the field. Honestly, some of my favourite memories have happened while waiting for my motorbike to get fixed. Cambodian people have taught me so much about being present, not stressing the small stuff and being generous. We all know that life has its ups and downs and things go sour, but why do we spend so much time asking, “why me?”.” We all have our struggles, we are all human and wasting our time on thoughts like “why?” or “how?”, is not making us any more content. There are no reasons for any of it besides the fact that we are all on a personal journey of spiritual growth in our lives and learning to have a bit more compassion, the innocence of experiencing a fresh moment, humility and gratitude could take us far on the road to peace! So, if you are curious about new perspectives that bring a newfound feeling of simple Joy, come visit Cambodia! Rent a motorbike and go into the country! When you return from an adventure there are beautiful hotels with modern-day luxuries for a fraction of western prices! When you get back to your beautiful hotel room at the end of the day, you will have far deeper gratitude for things like hot running water. Life is all about perspective… How do you frame yours?

In the past month we have hired three new teachers. They are highly qualified and passionate and really taking on a whole new curriculum at school. We got new books that the kids are very excited about! Since the end of rice planting season, we’ve gotten a new batch of about 40 students. There are so many kids coming to school everyday that we had to get a larger trailer to pick them up for class. Most of our students are girls because the parents cannot afford to send all of the kids to Public school, so usually the girls get left behind to help around the house and on the farm. Our new English teacher is a very intelligent woman who has completed University for teaching English and is also a midwife! They really look up to her and she is the first female teacher that we have had! We also have hired I lovely English woman to help us on the weekends for English class because our students double and because they are so eager to learn, we have broken them up into several groups that the two English teachers and our weekly volunteers help facilitate. We are currently extending our product line to making light covers, with the opposite side of the bottles, after we cut them and use The bottom half to make glasses. Rachel is currently in Bangkok finding lace, tassels and adhesive for the ambient light bulb covers.

We are collaborating with an organization called plastic free Cambodia to make posters in the Khmer language that we will be putting up in the village, they are also hosting a workshop at our school for the kids and their parents about the dangers of burning plastic trash and letting a disintegrate into the fields where we grow crops. If I had several very passionate and loving volunteers come out and share their construction skills, teaching skills, sports classes and music circles.

We have a care-taking family that has been working with us for two years and does an excellent job with helping our volunteers, maintaining the farm, picking the kids up from the school, pumping the water and helping with general overall overseeing of the project. This year they got a bonus, there is a portion of our land that we have signed over to them, and we are supporting them to start beekeeping there. This will give them an opportunity to grow and make some additional income additional to what the Red Road can provide. They are excited to learn the new skill set and feeling very proud that they will have it to pass down to their children. They do not own any land at this time, they simply live on site at our school and take care of everything. This new opportunity and bonus that they have received for their hard work the past two years has meant more to them than we can describe in words.

Thank you for your continued support.
